What is dimensional weight?Updated a month ago

For larger items, USPS and UPS both calculate weight both by actual weight and by "dimensional" weight, where the size of the package is factored into their pricing.

For USPS, dimensional weight is calculated as (LxWxH)/166. For UPS, dimensional weight is calculated as (LxWxH)/139.

If a package weighs 4 lbs., but ships in a box that measures 42" x 15" x 10", USPS would calculate the dimensional weight as 38 lbs. and UPS would calculate the dimensional weight as 46 lbs.

If the dimensional weight is more than the actual weight, than UPS and USPS will calculate the weight dimensionally. If the actual weight of a product is more than the dimensional weight, than UPS and USPS will use the actual weight.
