Why does it cost so much to ship a LiFePo4 battery? Can't you just ship it via USPS?Updated 2 years ago
LiFePo4 batteries are considered a "hazmat" item and require extra handling to ship. GoWesty's shipping crew is hazmat certified to handle getting these batteries to you safely. USPS will not accept a package with hazmat items. UPS will only ship these via UPS Ground to the continental United States. The batteries cannot go on planes, so expedited shipping services are not an option.
Each battery must ship in its own specific hazmat certified box. The box itself costs $6. UPS charges an additional $41 in fees to ship each hazmat item (if you order 2 batteries, they cannot ship together and the fee is per hazmat box, so $82 in fees plus $12 for the boxes).
Failure to comply to hazmat shipping requirements can result in over $83,000 in fines per violation. GoWesty works hard to remain compliant!
